Large figure of a hippopotamus made of unpainted plaster. In good condition with few surface signs of wear. Presumably made for the New Carlsberg Glyptoteket in Copenhagen. The figure is probably a museum copy of a hippopotamus figure that belongs to the museum's collection. The original figure is approximately the same size and made of ceramic. Similar figures can be seen in museums around the world. Some colored, others uncolored. In ancient Egypt, similar hippopotamus statuettes were often placed in tombs to protect the deceased in the afterlife or in homes to protect the family. Today, however, the figure is expected to be mainly used as a decorative object in the private home. Dimensions: H. 14 cm, W. 12.5 cm and L. 29.5 cm.
